Day One
Scripture: Genesis 3:1-7. Jesus Bible pg. 7.
Observation: Know your enemy. The Super Bowl is a few days away. The Chiefs and Eagles are preparing for the big game. They not only practice their own plays, but they watch film and study the opposing team. They want to know their opponents’ plays and tendancies. The want to know their enemy.
In Genesis, the beginning of God’s story, chapters one and two lays out God’s creation and innocence. EVERYTHING WAS GOOD. UNTIL…
The enemy shows up on the scene in chapter 3. Adam and Eve do not even know an enemy exists. Satan appears unannounced. He does not dress like an enemy nor look like an enemy. He does not sound like an enemy. But that is part of how Satan works. He wants to catch you with your guard down. If you haven’t already, read Genesis 3:1-7.\
Satan, the serpent, was crafty. He gets the woman to question God. God had said there was ONE tree you could not eat from. Satan twists God’s word, “You shall not eat from ANY tree in the garden?” And Even twists God’s instruction even more, ”You shall not eat or touch it.” God never said anything about touching it.
Satan then accuses God of hiding truth from Eve and withholding good from her. “You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
Application: Know your enemy. Last week we focused on “Truth matters.” Satan comes into a perfect, innocent world disguised and unannounced. He deceives. Eve did fell victim to sin. Adam soon followed.
As we look at the Story of God, we have to know that God wants the best for us. He provided the best for Adam and Eve. But they were deceived. Satan’s playbook remains the same, to deceive you and I.
Prayer. God, help me to know the enemy and know that You alone are good. I can trust You, Father. You are a good dad.
