Identity, Belonging, Purpose

Week One – Day Three – 24 Days of Christmas

Day Three

Scripture: Luke 3:15-21.  J.B. page 1565.

When you get an opportunity read the shaded page, 1567, entitled “One More Powerful.”  Again, this is not God’s Word, but wisdom and insight from one of the authors of this Bible.

Observation.  John the Baptizer, was the baby promised to Elizabeth and Zechariah in Luke chapter 1.  It is not the same John who wrote the Gospel of John.  This John came to “prepare the way” for Jesus.  John once said “one that is mightier than me” is coming.

Application.  John knew the BIG STORY was about Jesus, not himself.  John spent his life pointing others to Jesus, not to himself.  John knew that the BIG STORY is God’s story and John got to play a small part.  John did not keep the attention on himself.  He wanted only to make Jesus famous. And we still know about John today because he chose the BIG STORY,  God’s story, over his own.

You and I are given an invitation to be a part of the BIG STORY, God’s story.  We can trust Jesus and spend our lives pointing others to Jesus, like John did.  Or we can think a lot about ourselves, look after our own ego and needs and try to make ourselves famous.

Prayer:  God, help me to live for Your fame and glory.  Help me to live for the BIG STORY, Your story, not my own.  As John said (John 3:30) “You must increase and I must decrease.”  I do not want to live for my own ego and purposes.
