Identity, Belonging, Purpose

Week Nine Day Three

Day Three

Scripture: John 14:5-6.  J.B. page 1632.

Observation.  Have you ever been lost?  Or not known what decision to make?  Thomas, one of the disciples, is asking questions about where Jesus is going. Thomas says he doesn’t know the way.  He wants to know how to get there.

But Jesus, as he often does, turns the question on its head.  He tells Thomas and the others, the way is not a direction or path, but the person Jesus. He is THE way, THE truth, THE life.  Following Jesus is about a relationship with Him, knowing Him.  It is not about taking certain steps or actions.

A cool side note here is that in Acts, Christianity became first known as “The Way.” (Acts 9:2; 19:9,23; 22:4; 24:14,22).

Application.  Nothing else is required.  Jesus is the way to have a relationship with God.  It is NOT your good deeds plus believing.  Your relationship with God does not come to an end if you make a really stupid mistake.  He does not give up on you.  I repeat, God does not give up on you.  Once you believe in, put your personal trust in Jesus, you belong to God.

When you use a maps app on your phone it may tell you multiple ways to reach your destination.  But it does not work that way when we are seeking God.  Jesus is THE WAY, the ONLY way.  There is none other.

The disciples knew the way.  But then they (and us) were given a command, to go and share the way with others.  Many of our friends do not know the way.  They struggle with identity, purpose, sin, relationships and other things that Jesus is the answer to.  Today is a day for urgency.  Begin praying for a friend.  Look for a time to share Jesus with them.

Prayer: Jesus, You are the way, the truth and the life.  I can only have a relationship with God through You.  God give me an urgency to share You with friends who do not know You.  They are desperate for You and they do not even know it.  Give me courage to share the most important news ever
