Jesus Goes Indiana Jones
JESUS GOES INDIANA JONES
John 2
GOD WANTS TO SPEND TIME WITH YOU!!! If you are not familiar with our new format you might want to go back a week on DEEPENstudents.com and go through the devotionals entitled, START THE DAY WITH SOAP, #1-5. It explains a little more.
Scripture. Choose the passage. Have a plan, don’t make it a random passage in the Bible.
Observation. What does the passage say? What is difficult to understand? What does it say to me?
Application. How do I apply these verses? Is there something to give God thanks for? Is there is a sin to avoid?
Prayer. Simply end your time with God talking with Him.
Scripture. John 2:12-25. Look it up in your Bible, on a Bible app or on Biblegateway.com or Biblehub.com. John, chapter 2, verses 12-25.
Take a few minutes to read the verses.
Observation. Think about what the verse says. What instruction does it give? If you have a journal or notebook, write down some thoughts.
After the wedding the disciples get to hang out with Jesus and His family for a few days. They get to see Jesus away from everyone else. They see His personal life. Sometimes, when we get to see people this up close and personal, we see their “real” self and it is not so nice. However, it is cool to think the disciples got to see this side of Jesus and they REMAINED with Him. As they grew in their knowledge of Jesus, their faith got deeper too. The same thing happens with you and me.
So it is the Jewish Passover, a big Jewish holiday and everyone is gathering in Jerusalem to worship. (The Passover in the book of Exodus pointed to Jesus’ life in a big way. Every part of the Bible points to Jesus.) When Jesus and His disciples get there, they find people selling all kinds of stuff to take advantage of them and make a big profit.
Write down what happens next? How does Jesus react? As a disciple standing there, are you surprised at what Jesus did? Why/why not? Do you understand why he went all “Indiana Jones” on the merchants in the temple?
Application.
S Is there a sin for me to confess?
- is there a promise for me to claim?
- Is there an attitude for me to change?
- Is there a command for me to obey?
- Is there an example for me to follow?
Jesus, God with skin and sandals on, got angry. Real angry. Jesus was jealous for God’s name and His reputation. He did not want anything to damage it. He did not want anyone to think that buying and selling animals had anything to do with a personal relationship with the living God. People were more concerned with marketing religion that having a vibrant, passionate relationship with God.
It is easy to turn what is meant to be a living relationship into a dead religion! God wants your heart, all of your passion, all of our love.
WHAT CONSUMES YOU? Make this your consuming thought: His name, His fame and His glory. It’s all about Him.
Prayer. Take a few moments to really talk to God. Use CHAT to help you guide your prayer time. But most of all, be real with God. Talk to Him.
Confess
True confession is agreeing with God about your sin. It includes repentance, doing a 180 from your sin. Repentance is not just being sorry for being caught, but sorry for breaking the heart of God. Examine your heart. Admit your faults. Be teachable.
Honor
Honor God by praising Him for who He is. You can do this by reading verse of praise or singing a song to God.
Ask
Ask God for your needs. Praying for your own needs, both daily and crisis needs. Also, pray for the needs of others. Be specific!
Thank
Express gratitude for God has done! Write it down so you can remember how God has answered your prayers!
Pray. Remember, just talk to God. Look at the ingredients above. Not every prayer has to include all the ingredients. Just remember, be honest. Don’t try to sound religious or churchy. Listen to God’s heart and words as you talk to Him.
