Prayer When Its Tough

My friend, John, was a great friend and a great man.  A day after I lost him and a day after we prayed for him, it still sits hard in my gut.  And it gets tough to talk about prayer.  But that is what prayer is about…seeking God even during the toughest of times.

Pray:  God, I know You are close to us especially during the toughest of times. Thank you.

Grab your Bible:  2 Corinthians 1:3-7

 All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. ⁴ He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us. ⁵ For the more we suffer for Christ, the more God will shower us with his comfort through Christ. ⁶ Even when we are weighed down with troubles, it is for your comfort and salvation! For when we ourselves are comforted, we will certainly comfort you. Then you can patiently endure the same things we suffer. ⁷ We are confident that as you share in our sufferings, you will also share in the comfort God gives us.

God is a god of comfort.  He does not ignore you when you are hurting.  He is near.  He is close by and His heart breaks when you are broken.  And even though are times God may seem distant.  The truth is, He is near.  He hears your cries and sees your grief.

Prayer is all about this relationship with God.  Prayer is not a formality.  It is not just something we “have-to” do.  God is after you.  He wants your attention and your heart’s affection.

And so know that this God, who wants you to call “Daddy” loves you and is close to you when you are hurting!  So whatever you have on your heart, you CAN talk to God about it.

Today, accept that invitation.  Talk to God.  Share your heart with Him and your deepest thoughts and concerns. 

Prayer:  God, thank you for loving me, even when I am hurting.  Help me to run to you when I am crying and grieving.  I know you care deeply about the things that break my heart.  I love you God.

 Please pray for Beverly, John’s wife and their family.  John loved you guys and prayed for you by name…even though he lived hundreds of miles away.
