Friends For Life Week 2 Day 2
FRIENDS FOR LIFE
Week 2 Day 2
As of this morning I had 613 this friends on Facebook. It may have gone down by now! But if I were counting real friends I had in my lifetime, I would say there have been around 6-8. 6-8 great friends in 50 years! Yeah, I am probably on the low side of those averages, but did you know that King Solomon (remember the wisest man who ever lived!) wrote,
“A man of many friends comes to ruin, but there is a friend that sticks closer than a brother.” Like Facebook, your friendships may be broad, but not deep.
Today, I want to begin a journey talking about 2 great friends in the Bible: David and Jonathan.
Prayer: “Father, God, teach me to pursue godly friendships. Teach me how to be a great friend to others.”
Grab Your Bible: Read 1 Samuel 17:55-18:5.
As Saul watched David going out to meet the Philistine (This is Goliath!!!), he said to Abner, commander of the army, “Abner, whose son is that young man?”
Abner replied, “As surely as you live, Your Majesty, I don’t know.”
56 The king said, “Find out whose son this young man is.”
57 As soon as David returned from killing the Philistine (So David just killed Goliath!!!), Abner took him and brought him before Saul, with David still holding the Philistine’s head (David chops off Goliath’s head! – cool)
58 “Whose son are you, young man?” Saul asked him.
David said, “I am the son of your servant Jesse of Bethlehem.”
18 After David had finished talking with Saul, Jonathan became one in spirit with David, and he loved him as himself. 2 From that day Saul kept David with him and did not let him return home to his family. 3 And Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself. 4 Jonathan took off the robe he was wearing and gave it to David, along with his tunic, and even his sword, his bow and his belt.
5 Whatever mission Saul sent him on, David was so successful that Saul gave him a high rank in the army. This pleased all the troops, and Saul’s officers as well.
Did you catch the details? Jonathan, the King’s son, who is in line to succeed his dad as King, becomes friends with David, who God has set aside as the next king! Usually, one is trying to kill the other to make sure the other doesn’t become king.
YET, Jonathan and David become FRIENDS. Not friends like the 613, 612, 611 or less that I have on Facebook. They became REAL friends. The Bible says that Jonathan became one in spirit with David and loved him as himself. Wow! Way cool.
More to come…
Prayer: God give me a friend like you gave Jonathan and David each other. Help me to choose my friends wisely. I want someone who will be closer than a brother!
